The Program Director will oversee the following areas:
•    Provide energetic, visionary leadership, disciplined commitment to excellence, and effective, adaptive program strategies in the realization of ETM-LA’s vision for music education. Oversee ETM-LA’s long-running partner schools programs and help grow the organization’s ability and track record in supporting school systems and cultural organizations through professional development and consulting services.
•    Collaborate with Executive Director in planning programs for ETM-LA’s partner schools (selecting and assessing school partnerships, identifying staff, scheduling, budgeting, evaluating programs). Troubleshoot and re-design programs, strategies, and policies based on evaluation data and client feedback. Promote regular adoption of high-value best practices into ETM-LA’s professional culture. Evaluate the program for compliance with the ETM Model and expectations for independent affiliates.
•    Hire, supervise, and evaluate 15+ music teachers, two field supervisors and two program coordinators. Manage relationships with music teachers, program staff, principals, and other constituents. Maintain culture of excellence through well-articulated and enforced performance and discipline policies. Cultivate strong sense of camaraderie and high morale among all staff. Submit direct reports, and maintain written job performance evaluations based on written rubric that defines clear, observable, measurable work expectations. Actively recruit talented music teachers on an on-going basis and regularly terminate employees working below-standard who do not quickly improve in response to support and training.
•    Allocate, track, and evaluate effectiveness of annual program spending in excess of $200k.
•    Assess and revise ETM-LA’s curriculum and resource materials, and create new support materials for artists and schools.
•    Identify, design and implement training programs for music teachers (schedule workshops and observations; identify facilitators from among staff or external educational consultants).
•    Design and implement academic teacher professional development programs (workshops and special training institutes) to be delivered within partner school programs and to other educational system or cultural organization clients. Actively involve principals, program staff and other parties receiving services in order to create effective, top quality offerings.
•    Collaborate with principals, program staff, and other parties to plan and schedule program-related events (in-school concerts, school cultural assemblies on-site and off-site, afterschool programming, etc.).
•    Collaborate with evaluation staff to revise assessment tools (surveys, questionnaires, etc.).
•    Prepare summary reports on each program.
•    Collaborate with ETM and ETM-Bay Area, and other partnerships in and outside of Los Angeles, on professional development and resource materials.
 
Qualifications: Excellent written and oral communication skills; interpersonal and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage many projects simultaneously and to work independently and as part of a team; knowledge of curriculum design and educational assessment; computer literate (Word, Excel, Sibelius or Finale a plus). Minimum 5 years of music classroom teaching experience (elementary / middle school – high school a plus); experience designing and facilitating training; understanding of music theory; experience conducting and directing student music groups (i.e., band, orchestra, chorus, other ensembles); knowledge of music pedagogy methods; setting up ensemble programs from the ground-up; knowledge of music technology a plus; building relationships with music rental companies, communicating with parents, dealing with contracts, highly effective managerial and administrative experience.  Education: Masters degree preferred.

(posted 12/27/11)  MUSIC TEACHING ARTISTS / MUSIC TEACHERS
Teaching applicants should have a BA/BM or advanced degree in music or the performing arts. Previous teaching experience is a plus.  Newer candidates may be invited to participate as an Intern prior to becoming a hired teaching artist.
Most positions meet one to four days per week from September-June. Job responsibilities include:

  • acting as school music faculty
  • providing sequential music instruction to the students
  • collaborating with academic teachers to integrate arts throughout the school's curriculum and culture.

Successful candidates will receive paid training in pedagogy, lesson planning and classroom management. Teaching artists will also work with ETM-LA's administrative staff to assess the program and are required to attend mandatory paid training sessions in August and throughout the year.
Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (for internship, rising seniors at the undergraduate level acceptable).
  • Musical skill/ability in voice, musical theater, or instrumental.
  • Excellent stage presence, oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically.
  • People person with strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to the mission of the organization.
  • Must have a car.

Education Through Music-Los Angeles (ETM-LA) is now accepting applications for a paid 2011 summer Program Intern position, made possible by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
The Program Intern will work with the Education Through Music-Los Angeles staff to develop a Music Education Library and Resource Center as well as assemble curriculum and lesson planning materials for ETM-LA teaching artists and music educators. The intern will also facilitate the processing and management of program evaluation data.

This internship is sponsored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. 74 undergraduate interns will participate in the program this year at 74 performing, presenting, and literary nonprofit arts organizations and municipal arts agencies throughout LA County. In addition to their full-time 10 week paid internship, interns will participate in educational events as part of the program, which is funded by the Getty Foundation. The educational events are designed to provide interns with a broader perspective of the vibrant arts and cultural landscape of the County.
