Buckley Benefit Concert Raises Support for ETM-LA
On Friday, January 16, 2009, ETM-LA was the honored beneficiary for this year's Benefit Concert at the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks.
The Buckley Benefit Concert, a Cabaret-style event, featured a wide variety of musical acts by Buckley students who each went through a selective audition process. Students wowed the audience with musical theater gems by Stephen Schwartz and Andrew Lloyd Webber and numbers from the hit show Spring Awakening. Vocal and instrumental performers were impressive on pieces ranging from classical and jazz to vocal pop songs such as Fix You (Coldplay), How Do I Live? (Diane Warren) and Angel (Sarah Mclachlan). Also showcased were original pieces by Buckley's own, several dances, the choir, the jazz band, a capella groups, parent and faculty appearances, and rock bands.
ETM-LA students from St. Sebastian School, Luis Castellano and Ronwaldo Vuelba, made special appearances. Luis, accompanied by Executive Director Victoria Lanier on piano, performed Allegro on violin by Shinichi Suzuki. Ronwaldo and guitar Teaching Artist Perry Smith performed a duet of Sunshine of My Love by Cream.
The evening culminated in a surprise performance by Buckley parent and Guns ‘N' Roses bass player Duff McKagan and friends. The trio performed the Rolling Stones' Wild Horses and other favorites.
When asked afterwards what music means to them, Ronwaldo shared, "Music helps me concentrate with my studies," and Luis said, "music is fun." Buckley student Sheridan Hathaway offered, "Music is my outlet." Another student, Kylie O'Brien said, "Singing is my passion." She also added, "this fundraiser was important to me because I go to a school that has opportunities for the arts, and it's so unfortunate that other schools don't have the privilege."
Amidst the current economy, the arts are being cut first with a freeze already on current funding for programs already in motion. ETM-LA has already felt the impact as a chosen arts provider for the LAUSD Arts Community Partnership Network. Thanks to the generosity of the Buckley community and other donors, our programs will be able to continue on for all of the 1750+ at-risk youth we serve.
Education Through Music-LA gratefully thanks the Buckley community - faculty, parents, and students - for the event, which helped to raise awareness and support for music education for disadvantaged youth.
